It is widely quoted that only 2% of horse racing punters actually make anything like decent profits from horse racing over the long term. And probably much less than that are actually able to make a living from horse racing.
From my side of the fence, as the owner and operator of a successful racing tipster service, it is easy to see why the average man in the street doesn’t make a success of his betting activity.
I am often asked if it is possible to make decent profits from horse racing. I would list the following advice as vital to finding success when betting on horses.
1) Decide On Your Betting Bank From The Outset - It is important to never bet more than you can comfortably afford to lose. Decide on an amount that you are prepared to set aside solely for your betting bank, then divide this amount by 25 and the figure you are left with will become your stake. As your profits increase or decrease, you will always be betting one twenty-fith of your bank (if betting at level stakes), and this will offer you some protection against losing runs.
2) Never Chase Losses - The road to the poor house when betting on horse racing is to chase your losses. Trying to bet bigger stakes each time, following a losing sequence, will end in profit…. but only for your bookmaker! Stick to your staking plan and don’t divert from it whatever the temptation.
3) Leave Emotion Out Of The Equation - You should aim to develop a detached view to winners and losers alike. There will always be winners (if you know what you are doing), and there will always be losers. Don’t allow emotion to creep in whether you are in the middle of a winning sequence or a losing run. If you are serious about your horse racing betting, you must treat it like a business and aim for long term profits without becoming emotional, win or lose on the day.
4) Treat Your Betting As A Business, Not A Hobby - In order to make your betting pay over the long term, you must operate as you would if you were running your own business. This means keeping proper records of all of your betting activity, profits and losses.
5) Knowledge Is Power - If you can’t afford the time (and it can take years) to build up your own knowledge of the form book, or to make a few decent contacts of your own, then try to find a racing advisory/tipster service that has stood the test of time.
6) Aim For Long Term Profits - If you are using your own (or someone else’s) system to make your selections, give it enough time for a sensible test period. There is absolutely no point in jumping from one system to the next without giving it time to work.
The same applies to using a racing advisory/tipster service. Aim to find a service that has been around for some time, proofs their selections etc. Then once you have made your choice of system or tipster service to use, don’t jump from one to the other after a short period. Decide on a fair test period and stick to it.
Finally, horse racing can be a fascinating and exhilarating hobby, but if you want to make your betting pay, follow the rules above and you’ll have a head start over most punters out there!

Indy Racing League (IRL) Tickets – Going Out With a Bang
The several twists and turns of this year’s IndyCar Series have provided entertainment and thrills of all kinds for IRL fans nationwide, and despite the 2008 season coming to a close the parties are just getting started for IndyCar drivers, teams and crew members alike. The conclusion of this year’s IRL season ended with the Nikon Indy 300 at the All Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in Queensland, Australia, and even though Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe beat out Target Chip Ganassi’s Scott Dixon to win the race, it is Dixon who is being honored tonight in Las Vegas as the 2008 IndyCar Series champion.
A blowout awards ceremony will take place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas tonight celebrating Dixon’s victory in the IndyCar Series, while Andretti Green Racing and AFS Racing’s number 27 driver Raphael Matos will also be honored at the celebration as the champion of the 2008 Firestone Indy Lights series. The Championship Celebration will take place at the Palms, and the after-party will commence at the resort’s Rain Nightclub following the presentation of checks and hardware to both Dixon and Matos.
Anyone who had Indy Racing League (IRL) tickets to one of the races this season knows it’s an understatement to say that the 2008 IndyCar Series was full of ups, downs and surprises of all kinds. The first surprise came in the unification of the IRL, as both the IRL and Champ Car finally settled and let the sport become whole again, tacking on six teams, two races and floods of fans to next year’s IndyCar series. Another gratifying shock in the 2008 season occurred with a handful of first-time winners in the league, most notably Danica Patrick winning her first race (other first-time winners included Ryan Briscoe, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Justin Wilson and Will Power.) Another drastic change to the league? The domino effect of drivers and teams that started with news of Tony Kanaan negotiating for Dan Wheldon’s ride at Target Chip Ganassi Racing and resulted in Wheldon’s switch to Panther Racing and Vitor Meira’s consequential switch to A.J. Foyt Racing, further resulting in Darren Manning’s contract not being renewed and, because Kanaan ended up with Andretti Green instead of Ganassi, Dario Franchitti rounded out the shake-up by signing with Ganassi Racing in the end. As if this wasn’t enough to digest, IRL heavyweight Helio Castroneves topped off the 2008 IndyCar season with a shocking scandal, ending in an indictment by the U.S. government on one count of conspiracy to defraud and six counts of tax evasion, facing 35 years in prison while potentially losing his coveted spot with Penske Racing.
It’s undisputable that the 2008 IRL season has been one wild ride, and it was Ganassi’s Scott Dixon who held on the longest, crossing the finish line the most and coming out on top of the IndyCar Series with a total of 646 points, beating out Penske’s Helio Castroneves (629), Andretti Green’s Tony Kanaan (513), Ganassi’s Dan Wheldon (492), Penske’s Ryan Briscoe (447), Andretti Green’s Danica Patrick (379) and Marco Andretti (363), Rahal Letterman’s Ryan Hunter-Reay (360), KV Racing’s Oriol Servia (358) and Andretti Green’s Hideki Mutoh (346), who round out the top ten in the IndyCar standings for the year.
Although this year’s IndyCar season is officially over, it won’t be long until these gentlemen (and ladies) start their engines once again. Drag car racer, Lorne Walters, worked on his drag car for over two years, making it one of the fastest cars on the strip. He even competes against cars that have a higher rated horsepower than his 1984 drag racing street car that he picked up for next-to-nothing. He collected inexpensive, used parts for it for over a year, until he finally bolted it all together and cranked the ignition.
Since then, he has put a couple of seasons of driving and fine-tuning under his belt. He explained that it is not major changes that produce big leaps in performance but many little changes over time that makes the difference between winning and losing a race.
Removing the muffler increased his engine’s horsepower. Removing over three hundred pounds of non-essentials made the car lighter. Removing the belt-driven fan and replacing it with a battery-powered fan reduced the load on the engine. Changing from street tires to tires that get sticky when you lay rubber and heat them up increased his car’s traction. All of these changes increased his car’s speed.
When you are counting your racing time in tenths of a second, every little change brings you closer to winning.
One of Lorne’s motto’s to live by is, You can’t learn it if you don’t do it. If you want to become a better and more successful Drag Race driver, you can’t just read about it or watch it, you must do it! The more you do it, and apply what you learn from the experience, the better you become.
You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about drag car racing. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.
Before he ever thought of driving his own car though, Lorne joined a pit crew for a stock car driver, which allowed him to network with other enthusiasts and also get into the thick of it. Once he got bitten by the race car fever, getting behind the wheel became a driving obsession.
Consistency is also one of the major keys to winning. In Drag Racing, it isn’t always the fastest car that wins, but also the one who stays consistent in doing the little things right. Good race timing scores must be repeated often.
Lorne also learned quickly that when you are on the strip, ready to go, you don’t hang around waiting to be told to go. Waiting for the tree of lights to reach green-for-go cost him 1.2 seconds. Which meant that his competitor, who exploded his engine’s horsepower into forward motion just prior to green, left the gate just as the tree hit green and was way out ahead of him. There is always a lag time before the car will actually burst forward.
When Lorne started out with his own car, tagging along with a successful racer who knew the circuit and all the ropes placed him car lengths beyond his competition. He also gained much of his knowledge by asking lots of questions, searching the Internet for free information, and by hands-on experience.
Drag Racing is no longer a hobby to Lorne, it is a passion a passion that pushes him from race to race throughout the season.
